If you do not compare auto insurance rates you will almost certainly not get the best deal, and I am not talking just in premiums but also in benefits. In the old days, the only way to compare auto insurance rates was to write or phone several companies or insurance brokers and wait for the answers. Now, of course, you can compare auto insurance rates on line. This is a good place to compare rates.

What should you look for when comparing insurance rates? Obviously, the price is the first thing to check, and whether you can pay monthly is the second. Also, check whether there is a penalty in paying monthly. Some companies add a small amount for monthly payments.

Next, you need to make sure that all the companies are offering the same level of cover. You may find that one offers a very high level of cover for one type of incident. It may be the sort of thing that statistically rarely happens. That is why they are able to make that offer. But if it is something that you see being of value, take it into account. Otherwise, do not be misled by an apparently huge benefit of dubious value.

You need to make sure that any discounts you get for being a certain age, or for not having had an accident in, say, five years are taken into account in all the policies you are looking at. This means you need to understand some of the terms. For example, Personal Injury Protection (PIP) is cover for anyone injured whoever is at fault. Property Damage Liability (PDL) is damage to other people's property. Make sure you have adequate levels of both in all the policies when you compare auto insurance rates.

Finally, do not go with the cheapest quote unless you are sure it is the best all round.
