The week that was in MMA: Urijah checks things out
A week that was supposed to be about Brock Lesnar and Kenny Florian turned on a dime to focus on Dana White's tantrum over the American Kickboxing Academy.

Late Wednesday night, Dana White announced that Jon Fitch was no longer part of the UFC. By Thursday night, Lorenzo Fertitta had cleaned up the mess and AKA fighters were once again welcome in the UFC. The turn of events was bizarre, to say the least. Was this an orchestrated plan from Zuffa, or a childish temper tantrum from White? No matter what, it was bad business and the UFC came out of it with egg on their face.

With that out of the way, the MMA world is free to focus on what matters: who is the best fighter in the world? Yahoo! Sports weighs in on the subject with its latest rankings.

The boxing vs. mixed martial arts debate rages on with a shot at MMA from boxing promoter Todd DuBoef. Can't we all just get along? Except, you know, when we're beating the crap out of each other. Ricky "Hitman" Hatton thinks we can.

Is Tito Ortiz the MMA equivalent of Barry Bonds?

MMA, done surprisingly well, at a high school in Massachusetts.

As we head into the final stretch for the Ultimate Fighter, Cage Potato sits down for a motivational speech from Al "Stankie" Stankiewicz.

Kenny Florian has come a long way from his days on the Ultimate Fighter, and he is ready for a title fight with B.J. Penn.

The disinterest Silva vs. Cote showed at the bank with only 300,000 pay-per-view buys.

You want proof that the UFC is not fixed? Two words: Chuck Liddell.

If Jake Shields sign with the UFC, as he is expected to do, who should he fight first? My vote is Jon Fitch or Diego Sanchez.

Have a great weekend, everyone, and try not to get choked out by Frank Shamrock.

Swick is cool with UFC and his gym
With all the drama that came down on Thursday between the UFC and the fighters at the American Kickboxing Academy, welterweight Mike Swick was put in an odd position. Would he choose his teammates and gym or the fighting promotion? As it turns, he didn't have to choose either because the UFC wasn't threatening to dump every fighter from AKA, just Jon Fitch, Cain Velasquez, Christian Wellisch and Josh Koscheck. Swick told MMARated that the AKA fighters were free make their own decisions and break from management if they wanted:

"The team is still the same. We're not against each other at all. The situation is your relationship with UFC. I only know mine. They've take care of me in the past and I've taken care of them."

Swick is sporting a pretty impressive insane man look. But he's got a way to go to reach Dustin Hazelett level with the beard. His comments about the upcoming Jonathan Goulet fight are interesting. This is a make or break fight for Swick, who is looking to carve out a name at 170 lbs.

Randy Couture is going nowhere according to wife Kim
It's Couture in the Cage III tonight as Kim Couture steps into action at Strikeforce in San Jose. Her husband Randy lost his UFC heavyweight title last weekend to Brock Lesnar at UFC 91. The week before Randy's son Ryan won an amateur fight in Washington. Kim goes for her first professional win against Lina Kvokov.

Couture says she's come a long way since her brutal loss to Kim Rose back in June:

"Honestly it was the best thing that couldn't happened in my career. Now i kind of feel like a caged tiger. I want to go in there and impose my will."

Couture mentioned that she was screwed from the start of the fight when Rose cracked her with a huge right hand that had her on queer street for the remainder of the fight. She never got her equillibrium back.

If anything, she's resilient. Couture has that in common with her husband, who she says hasn't once mentioned retirement since the loss to Lesnar. UFC color analyst Joe Rogan painted a picture of doom in the cage last Saturday implying that it could be the end of the road for the 45-year old.

"I don't even know where that came from," said Couture. "I thought he did a fantastic job. He stuck to the gameplan and controlled him that first round. There were a couple of times he had him up and was ready to dump him on his head which I think would've had a big impact on that fight."

Click below to listen to Couture talk about her career and husband Randy (ESPNRadio1100 w/Cofield & Cokin):

Lesnar won the fight in devastating fashion but Couture, just like her husband, is still unwilling to give him too much credit:

"I gained a new appreciation for how big he is. It's definitely going to play in his favor. If he's smart and keeps working at it, putting that skill behind that, it's gonna be a big advantage. (Randy) said he didn't feel too strong or too heavy. I'd love to see the rematch."

Couture talked about the way Lesnar handled himself after the victory. She feared that he would act like a jackass but he didn't. There were also no complaints behind the scenes about Lesnar grabbing the cage on a few occasions or throwing illegal hammerfists to the back of Randy's head.

Couture did get into the Gina Carano to the WEC story as well.

"I think she's definitely interested. I think that would be fantastic. It would be a big draw. She realizes that the interest is there to see her fight Cyborg. There's no other options (aside from WEC)."

Couture did mention Strikeforce but it sounded like the lack of live television aside from HDNet would hurt Strikeforce's chances to land Carano. No surprise, Couture did not throw out Affliction as a possibility for Carano.

Fitch has one a helluva day
On a day when the New York Yankees passed the torch from one Steinbrenner to another, was anyone else thinking that the UFC resembled the old days of the Yankees' Bronx Zoo on Thursday? People were shocked in the morning to learn that welterweight title contender Jon Fitch was booted from the company over a contract squabble. And then just like the old days when manager Billy Martin and George Steinbrenner would go crazy on each other and then make nice hours later, the UFC and Fitch buried the hatchet by the evening.

MMARated's Ariel Helwani caught up with Fitch at American Kick Boxing Academy in San Jose before tonight's Strikeforce event. The smirk on Fitch's face tells you what kind of day it was:

"It was never even about the agreement or the contract. It was the approach we felt that Dana (White) was a little hot-headed and threatening us right off the bat. It didn't seem like a professional way to do things."

Fitch paints a picture portraying UFC president Dana White as the root of the problem in the squabble and that owner Lorenzo Fertitta was the voice of reason. Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports told ESPNRadio1100 in a radio interview on Thursday that during a telephone interview with White on Wednesday, Fertitta was just as impassioned and could be heard in the background backing strongly exactly what the very angry White was saying about Fitch.

Jon Fitch is unemployed, but hilarious

I wish I could explain Dana White's decision to cut not just Jon Fitch, but ties with American Kickboxing Academy. It makes no sense to me, and it may rid the UFC of some great fighters, not only in Fitch, but possibly in Cain Velasquez and Josh Koscheck. I can't fathom why they can't get together on a contract, so I won't try to explain it. Instead, let's take a look back at one of Fitch's funniest interview. He tells us how cutting weight can affect his manhood and why fighters tug on their shorts before weighing in. The language is not safe for work.

Tuffies: Recap and Awards for Episode 9 of the Ultimate Fighter

In a surprisingly good episode of the Ultimate Fighter, we get to see a good fight, some training and why you don't mess with a man's cereal.

When discussing Krzystof's (heretofore to be known as K) win over Kyle Kingsbury, Junie Browning says that his sister could have caught Kyle in an arm bar. That might be true, but since going off the sauce, Junie sure has become a grump. Going into the final first round fight, Mir has four guys still alie, and Nog has three. John "the Hugger" Polakowski and George Roop are next to decide the last fighter to move on.

Junie calls John nuts. Pot. Kettle. Anyway, John says that he likes to give long hugs and really let people now how he feels. He also had Efrain do a painting that says "Fire the Cannons" to get himself worked up for the fight. Whatever works for you, John.

Roop is a classic, skinny white boy who learned to fight to defend himself. (See McCrory, Tamdan.) Roop's right hand got twisted up in training and he is having trouble making a fist. That's not good news.

When John eats his breakfast in the morning, he notices that all of his marshmallows are missing from the Lucky Charms. He is pissed. He's right. You don't mess with a man's Lucky Charms. Though he is the nicest guy in the house, he won't let this go. He won't even give anyone on Team Mir a hug! Nog says that on the inside, John is a mean guy. Apparently, that only shows up when you mess with his breakfast.

Roop's hand is a huge concern. He's constantly icing it, but it's still frighteningly swollen. Mir and the other coaches are training Roop to avoid using his right hand. Roop seems willing to fight with his hand blown up like a balloon.

At the weigh-in, John tries to give Mir a hug. Mir seems a little annoyed. I can see why Nog gets along with John, because they're two of the most genial guys ever to be on TUF. At the house, Nog talks smack to Roop, but it is the most fun-loving smack ever spoken. Roop and John even hug the night before the fight. Awww.

They hug again when they go in to touch gloves! Then they start punching eachother in the face. After some stand-up where Roop's hand isn't a factor, he easily takes John down and works some quick ground and pound. John is slippery, and keeps moving around. Roop is dominating, but John is hanging on. Roop gets John's back but can't do anything with it, so John reverses and is on top. It turns to a ground and pound war, with both fighters landing punches. First round over.

In between rounds, John asks if he won the first round. His corner lies to him and said "Oh yeah."

John comes out much more aggressively in this round, landing a few damaging punches to start the round. Nog yells for John to knock him out. That doesn't seem very helpful. Roop takes John down and throws some big home run punches. Roop takes John back, and tries to flatten him out for a rear naked choke but John is defending well. This round goes to John, in my opinion, because John's defense is so good. Third round?

Nope. George Roop is the winner. Dana White thinks the fight should have gone to the third round, and so do I. John takes it well, and says that he shouldn't have left it in the hand of the judges. Now Mir has five in the next round, and Nog has three. Back at the house, some of guys let loose by throwing eggs at Junie. Junie does the really smart thing and tries to catch the eggs. When they splatter all over him, he gets angry. John has a solution -- shots for peace! Everyone, drink!

When deciding on the next round fights, K and Eliot want Bader, Bader wants Eliot, and Vinny wants K. Phillipe wants Roop, Roop wants Phillipe but thinks Junie is the weakest, Junie wants Efrain, Efrain wants Junie. This will be easy to make these match-ups. The match-ups are Bader vs. Eliot, Phillipe vs. Roop, K vs. Vinny and Junie vs. Efrain. That will air on Dec. 3 in back-to-back episodes.

Nice guys finish last award: John Polakowski, the hugger.

Mr. Facetime (Achievement in being sure to get as much camera time as possible): Junie Browning

Best Product Placement Award: Lucky Charms. It might have been unintentional, but Lucky Charms got a ton of exposure due to John's meltdown over his missing marshmallows.

Hazelett's motivation is three-fold

Generally making money and kicking ass is more than enough to drive the average mixed martial artist. Dustin Hazelett is cut from a different cloth. The 22-year Kentucky native wants to set a standard for submission experts, fight for the oppressed and get some new sponsors.

Yahoo! Sports caught up with Hazelett where he went in depth on the artistry of the submission, in particular the phenomenon of the omoplata:

"One of the beautiful things about jiu-jitsu is that you start working on concepts once you get past a certain point. You have to have your basic armbar, your basic triangle and your basic omoplata. Once you get those moves down you can start doing your own things. That's one of the things I love about jiu-jitsu because you take what works and do it."

Click below to listen to Hazelett interview (ESPNRadio1100 w/Cofield and NBC's Mike Chiapetta):

Hazelett also said that as a fellow nerd-type, he felt bad beating Tamdan McCrory at UFC 91, because he knows what it was like being bullied as a kid growing up. "McLovin" touches on the future of "the beard" as well. UFC color analyst Joe Rogan went ballistic over Hazelett's Kimbo Slice-like facial hair at the UFC 91 weigh-in. Hazelett said that he is considering going with the Rollie Fingers-like handlebar mustache next time out if he can get some sponsor backing.

If you're a hardcore or just learning about the sport make sure you listen to Hazelett talk about the omoplata conceptually. He gives a nice explanation of why many fighters like the move and why some fans don't fully understand its finishing potential. The guy knows what he's talking about since he's raked in $105,000 in UFC Submission of the Night bonuses.

UFC's White defends MMA, fires back at boxing promoter
Todd duBoef, the president of the powerful boxing promotional company Top Rank, clearly does not understand mixed martial arts very well, as his recent comments in a Los Angeles Times article would indicate.

During a media day workout for Manny Pacquiao on Monday, duBoef questioned the safety of MMA based upon the finish of the Brock Lesnar-Randy Couture heavyweight title fight on Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Lesnar knocked Couture down with a right to the back of the ear and then finished him with a series of blows on the ground.

That caused duBoef to question the widely held belief that MMA is a safer sport than boxing in an interview with the Times' Lance Pugmire.

"When I see stuff like that, it looks like nothing more than a Toughman contest," duBoef told Pugmire. "There's no way it's safer than boxing."

Au contraire, Mr. President.

The UFC was founded in 1993 and began the modern era of MMA. Since that time, there have been two deaths in MMA competition. Douglas Dedge died on March 18, 1998, from injuries sustained in a fight on an unregulated card in Kiev, Ukraine, two days earlier. And in 2007, Sam Vasquez died on Nov. 30, 2007, from injuries sustained in an Oct. 20 fight in Houston.

The Journal of Combative Sport has documented 71 deaths since 1993 in boxing, including several from shows that Top Rank promoted.

DuBoef's comments did not escape the notice of UFC president Dana White, who ripped him upon reading the Times story.

"What Todd duBoef said the other day in the L.A. Times, this is the same Todd duBoef who got the free tickets from me to be at that event that night," White said. "He said that the Randy Couture stoppage proves that boxing is much safer than MMA. [Top Rank chairman] Bob Arum is 95 years old and senile, when he says crazy [expletive] you know, it goes over your head because you expect it from him. Bob has been saying crazy [expletive] since Day 1. But Todd duBoef? What does Todd duBoef know about MMA?

"I have a study from Johns Hopkins that proves that MMA is safer than boxing. Todd duBoef ought to stick to what it is he knows, but I don't know what that is. He's Bob Arum's stepson and that's how he got that job at Top Rank. This is insane. Bob Arum's stepson commenting on MMA safety? He doesn't know what he is talking about. I don't know what he knows, but whatever it is, he ought to stick to that."

The Johns Hopkins' study White referenced was published in the July 2006 edition of the Journal of Sports Science and Medicine.

In it, it makes several references to the fact that MMA is a safer sport with fewer traumatic brain injuries than in boxing.

"With MMA competitions, the opportunity to attack the extremities with arm bars and leg locks and the possibility of extended periods of grappling could serve to lessen the risk of traumatic brain injury," the article noted.

In its conclusions, it noted that "Knockout rates are lower in MMA competitions than in boxing. This suggests a reduced risk of TBI (traumatic brain injury) in MMA competitions when compared to other events involving striking."

Ortiz looking more and more like Bonds
Tito Ortiz is living a nightmare. While he's weighing his options on a new deal, he's sidelined after back surgery until the middle of 2009. Will it be Affliction or UFC? His lousy relationship with UFC president Dana White is well-documented. He's also got off to a bad start with Affliction negotiations. And now Affliction's long-term prognosis is shaky at best.

For a guy who's looking to make top shelf money as a fighter, his negotiating stance stinks. A while back we compared Ortiz's plight to that of Barry Bonds. Bonds' agent actually said in the middle of last season that he would take the MLB minimum. Would Ortiz come back if he wasn't making in excess of $200k per fight?

Yahoo! Sports caught up with "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" around UFC 91 in Las Vegas to talk about his health and future.

Paulo Filho joins a large group of wasted talent
Paulo Filho, the former World Extreme Cagefighting champ, makes me sad. He was not brought over to the UFC's stable of fighters after the WEC dissolved his weight class. Filho's bizarre behavior in a loss to Chael Sonnen, his inability to make weight and decision to ship the championship belt to Sonnen all played a factor in his release from Zuffa.

His strange odyssey puts him in a sad group of athletes who have wasted their talents. The gifted running back Ricky Williams retired from the NFL rather than face a suspension for marijuana use. Maurice Clarett descended quickly from a top prospect to Grey Goose-guzzling, unemployed football player. Denny McLain, the Detroit pitcher who was the last to win 30 games, watched a career fizzle after becoming too close with organized crime figures. The list goes on and on.

Hopefully, Filho will get some help and be able to come back to mixed martial arts as he could truly make some waves. The names above haven't completely ended in sad stories. Williams is back in the league and has 437 yards this season for the Dolphins. Time away from the sport may help Filho, just as it has done for Williams.

Watch Frank Shamrock choke a blogger out
Hard for the Yard. In this video, he is choked out by Frank Shamrock, and it takes about .0005 seconds:

This gives me a little perspective on why a fighter might not be able to hold on for just a few more seconds when in a choke. It also gives me perspective on why I will run the other way if Frank Shamrock is walking in my direction.

UFC's White is ready to bring Carano into the fold
In a sudden change of heart, UFC president Dana White said that he's willing to promote women's fighting. Neil Davidson of the Canadian Press reported that White told fans during a Q & A session in Toronto that he is interested female fighter Gina Carano. White said that he would welcome Carano (pictured on the right) to fight under Zuffa's World Extreme Cagefighting banner:

"Gina Carano is a star, I think she's talented. I think she's got all the tools, so what I'm willing to do is bring Gina into the WEC. We could do fights whenever there's a challenger for Gina. That's how I'll test the waters and see how it goes."

In the past, White has consistently said that he wasn't interested in promoting female MMA:

"I'm not a huge fan of women fighting. Period. Not to say that I don't acknowledge that there are amazing female athletes out there in every sport. I just think right now we had a hard enough time getting over the stigma of the men"

This could be a huge boost for Carano and the WEC. She gets to continue fighting on free television on Versus and the WEC could see a nice ratings boost.

Carano's previous promoter, EliteXC went out of business three weeks ago. Unless there's some unforeseen legal hurdles, Carano is a free agent. On CBS, she was a ratings monsters drawing a combined 10 million-plus viewers in two fights against Kaitlin Young and Kelly Kobold that ranked amongst the top 10 highest viewed fights in mixed martial arts history.

With a UFC 94 win, GSP will get Silva in 2009
Today in Canada, UFC continued its UFC 94 tour of Las Vegas, Toronto and Honolulu. Dana White dropped a bombshell saying that if UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre beats UFC lightweight champ B.J. Penn at UFC 94 in January, he will get a shot at UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva.

White comments on a possible Silva v. GSP fight around the six minute mark.

Penn will not get a shot at Silva if he wins. He also refused to comment on Kenny Florian's comments in the cage and during the ESPNRadio1100 UFC 91 post-fight show. The Hawaiian did tell Neil Davidson of the Canadian Press that he wants to fight Matt Hughes after he beats GSP:

"Did anyone ever kick your ass before and you got pissed off about it?" he said when asked why.

White also mentioned that the UFC will return to Montreal in March or April of 2009. It's more likely to be April with Columbus tentatively slated to get a return date on Mar. 7 during The Arnold Classic.

Tip from MMARated.com

]]>

Florian can handle time off. Fans can't.
Kenny Florian's convincing win over Joe Stevenson ensured that he will have a shot at the lightweight belt. But when? Current lightweight champ B.J. Penn will fight Georges St. Pierre for the welterweight title on January 31, 2009. This means that Penn won't be available to fight again until April, at the earliest. Matt Hughes mentioned that he will fight Matt Serra in mid-April. Perhaps Penn-Florian could headline the card.

A layoff like this is not odd for Florian. After choking out Din Thomas in September of 2007, he didn't fight again until he TKO'ed Joe Lauzon in April of this year. He had no trouble shaking off the cage rust and winning, and then going on to two great wins -- a decision against Roger Huerta and Saturday's win over Stevenson -- later this year.

Fans, on the other hand, aren't quite as patient. One blogger thinks that the title fight will not happen because the UFC will force Florian into a fight before his bout with Penn. Posters at different forums discussing the UFC agree. And what happens if Penn beats GSP? Will he face the top welterweight challenger, Thiago Alves, or Florian first? No matter what happens, the "superfight" between Penn and GSP will affect many other fighters, especially Florian.

Silva and Kimbo should meet in the squared circle
Enough of the boxing talk from Anderson Silva and Kimbo Slice. Silva re-ignited the discussion of taking a shot at boxing with the news that he's working with Freddie Roach. Roach confirms Silva's appearance at The Wild Card Boxing Club in Los Angeles in this video. The UFC middleweight champ is working with the renowned boxing trainer just like Andrei Arlovski, B.J. Penn and Sokoudjou have in the past. He may simply be trying to improve his hands for what could be an upcoming fight against Chuck Liddell at UFC 95 or we may have to again listen to the ridiculous notion that he wants to fight Roy Jones Jr.

What's worse than that? How about Kimbo Slice, coming off a 14 second KO loss, saying he wants to try boxing too. Kimbo told Dan LeBatard last week he's ready to crossover.

Slice entering boxing really wouldn't be that bad since we know that he's a bit of a circus act. For Silva, one of MMA's best, the attempt at boxing is a lose-lose proposition. If he gets destroyed by someone like Jones, he and mixed martial arts are a laughingstock. And since the 39-year old Jones Jr. was just smashed by Joe Calzaghe, what does a victory really do for Silva?

Click below to hear Kimbo boxing comments (790 The Ticket):

Silva says he walks around at 230 lbs. and Kimbo weighs in for his fights around 235, so let's match up the two boxing wannabes to battle it out wearing the big gloves.

Make sure to listen to the entire Kimbo interview on 790 The Ticket. In spite of his obvious deficiencies as a legit fighter, Slice comes off once again as a very genuine and likeable guy.

Hitman loves UFC and Lesnar

Ricky Hatton gets it. The guy is a media darling in the U.K. Proof positive will come this week when several thousand of his followers make the trek to Las Vegas in a terrible economy for his fight against Paulie Malignaggi. He's also smart enough to see the handwriting on the wall with the UFC.

"The Hitman" was in attendance this past weekend at UFC 91 and met with B.J. Penn. He also popped off a great line to The Sun about how scary Brock Lesnar is:

"Brock's a big bloke, isn't he? If you found him in bed with your girlfriend you'd tuck him in!"

Hatton did something so few folks in boxing are willing to and that's admit the sport needs to steal some things from MMA:

"Boxing can learn so much from MMA. The presentation really is first class. The UFC do so much more to build the atmosphere up for the fans in the arena before the fights. By the time the fight comes on you are really ready for it - you can't wait."

From top-to-bottom, the recent Joe Calzaghe-Roy Jones Jr. card could down as the worst major boxing cards ever. Hatton says boxing needs to stack its cards more often:

"The whole of UFC 91 was great - not just the main event - and rather than boxing ignore it or pretend it isn't as big as it is, it should take a leaf out of the UFC's book and start getting the crowd more involved with the show. The UFC has big screens all around the arena with pre-fight interviews on before the fight - why can't boxing promoters in the UK do something like that?"

The UFC has been doing this stuff for at least six years and boxing has stubbornly resisted getting with the times. Boxing fans can argue all they want but all you need to see is that a very hyped fight like Calzaghe-Jones Jr. did just 225,000 pay-per-view buys to understand there's trouble on the horizon.

Bio, Algebra, ground and pound? MMA at high school in Mass.

Mixed martial arts has experienced an explosion of popularity in the past few years, and that has reached children and teenagers. Many gyms now offer youth training. Xtreme Couture has a kids club that meets three times a week at its Las Vegas location, and Overtime MMA in Naperville, Ill. gives a special rate for children. Now, MMA has a home at a high school in Winchester, Mass.

Winchester High School has a mixed martial arts club run by students. The group meets a few times a week, has guest instructors that help out from time to time and is financed due to the fund raising of an industrious senior. The school will not let students hit each other in the head, but other than that, it's a safe place where kids can practice MMA.

I applaud the school administration for being open-minded and allowing their students to use try MMA. For one, a club at a high school is a more affordable option than joining a pricey gym, and students can try out the sport before they decide to become committed to the idea of being the next Anderson Silva. The other reason this is a great idea is that it gives a home to the students who aren't comfortable with team sports, and most importantly, gives students the opportunity to get rid of aggression in a safe environment designed for it.

After watching Dustin Hazelett and Tamdan McCrory fight last week in the nerdiest bout to ever hit the Octagon, it became clear to me that MMA can be for everyone. You can be as small as Urijah Faber, as large as Brock Lesnar and as skinny as Miguel Torres and still be a champion in this sport. Why not give high school kids, who often feel like they don't belong, a place where they can feel normal?

Vegas gets crushed by UFC 91: Y! goes 4-0 with highlighted picks
Anytime favorites come through in a big way, the Las Vegas sportsbooks lose out. Bettors love playing the chalk and it was no different for UFC 91. The favorites took seven-of-nine fights and the biggest movers all came in. The city's players pounded Brock Lesnar. He closed right before the fight in the -140 range at most books. That was a 60-cent shift from when Randy Couture opened as the early favorite. Demian Maia, Dustin Hazelett and Matt Brown all moved at least 50 cents and posted easy wins.

The Yahoo! MMA EXperts blog went 4-0 with its recommended plays on Maia (opened at -150), Kenny Florian (-200), Jeremy Stephens (-180) and Hazelett (-120). That makes it 14-1 on top plays dating back to September with UFC 88, UFN 15, UFC 89 and UFC 90.

Before players start thinking betting favorites is easy, don't forget that the dogs were a respectable 12-16-1 in the three previous events.

White says UFC doesn't need a network television deal

With the UFC getting major coverage on ESPN this weekend, does an EliteXC-like television deal come next? White said during the UFC 91 post-fight press conference that the UFC doesn't need network television.

"The networks are so strong they pretty much tell you the deal they're going to give you whether you like it or not. We don't need it. We don't need help from anybody"

White says the UFC is doing just fine with cable outlet SpikeTV:

"I'm happy as hell to be on SpikeTV, be there forever. I could care less."

Click below to listen to White talk about the UFC and television:

Will the UFC hit a ceiling in the next few years if it doesn't forge a deal with one of the networks? A deal with ESPN to get some programming on may be more effective than having to bow to needs and whims of network executives. It may damage the sport in the future if a UFC run on network television was to flop.

Was Lesnar's finish bad for the UFC?
Those of us who cover mixed martial arts and are fans of the sport saw nothing wrong with the way the Brock Lesnar-Randy Couture fight finished. Apparently that's not the case with new fans and the uninitiated media.

During the UFC 91 post-fight press conference, a German reporter asked the fighers if there was anything disturbing about the close to the fight. Couture, the guy who was on the receiving end of 25 hammerfists, was confused as to why there would be an issue:

"We fall under every regulatory commission in this country. This is definitely a sport. I guess I would question because of that scenario why it wouldn't be considered a sport?"

Lesnar's answer got a chuckle out of the reporter.

Click below to listen to Couture/Lesnar comments on the brutality of the ending:

Todd DuBoef, the head of boxing's Top Rank has the same concerns, "When I see stuff like that, it looks like nothing more than a tough man contest. There's no way it's safer than boxing."

ESPN's Around the Horn picked up on the same theme. Could the finish actually hurt UFC's chance to get consistent coverage from ESPN?

Demian Maia to coach next season of TUF? Really?
During the post-UFC 91 press conference, Dana White hinted that Demian Maia might coach the next season of the Ultimate Fighter, which will feature fighters from the U.S. and the U.K. You read that right. Demian Maia.

Don't get me wrong. Maia is a fantastic fighter and will have a prolific career in the UFC. His jiu-jitsu is at a level rarely seen in the Octagon, and his potential to grow as a fighter is unlimited. I didn't expect him to win on Saturday, and he easily proved me wrong. I can't wait to see what he does next, because it will be exciting.

However, Maia has only fought four UFC matches. Yes, he has won all four in breathtaking fashion, but he is still not a well-rounded fighter. His stand up needs a ton of work. How is he going to teach the next generation fighters when he doesn't know how to do it himself?

The TUF coaches in the past have been champions and legends. Starting with Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell and leading us to the current season with interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and former champion Frank Mir, one of the draws of the show was watching great fighters impart their wisdom and experience to a younger, up-and-coming crop of fighters.

There were rumors floating around that the U.S. coaching job was going to Dan Henderson, and then to Rich Franklin, but both have passed on the offer. Perhaps Maia will be offered the coaching job not because of his credentials, but because the UFC is running out of prospects.

What the world is saying about UFC 91: Stephens wins KO of forever

USA Today's take on Lesnar's win.

Kenny Florian certainly made a statement on Saturday. Not only did he beat Joe Stevenson convincingly, but he also told B.J. Penn that he wanted to kill him.

The L.A. Times went behind the scenes for UFC 91.

MMA Junkie gives us a rundown of fight bonuses for the weekend. Jeremy Stephens is the most deserving "Knockout of the Night" winner, possibly ever.

There is talk of the UFC heading to Germany next year, and some are hoping that Couture-Liddell IV will be the headliner fight. Do not count me in that group.

Is Brock Lesnar a top-five heavyweight?

Saturday's crowd drew $4.8 million. I still can't wait to hear what the pay-per-view numbers are. The UFC doesn't always release them, but rest assured, if they topped Dana White's prediction of 1.2 million, he will be shouting it from the mountain tops.

White mocks on his boss and Bravo nails the main event
It's time to check in on the final two installments of Dana White's UFC 91 video blog. The highlight was watching White mock on his boss Lorenzo Fertitta for tripping during the weigh-ins. You get a sense of the clubhouse mentality that exists around the UFC. Even the billionaire owner can be the butt of the joke. Fertitta is seen later during Episode 6 saying that it wasn't a full-fledged trip. We also find out that it was the shoes' fault. White calls them roach-killers.

Other highlights of the Friday blog include White's feminine looking pink shirt. It's no shocker to find out recluse Stephan Bonnar has never seen the White video blog and Eddie Bravo predicts the way that Lesnar would win the fight.

The Saturday blog shows B.J. Penn giving Georges St. Pierre advice on how to dress when he goes to Honolulu this week. There are lots of pre-fight meetings with White and the fighters. 50 Cent says he wanted to scrap with little Joe Stevenson. It closes with the MMA media's biggest name Jon Anik from ESPN, chatting up White.

Florian sends a message to B.J. Penn

Anyone underestimating Kenny Florian got a wakeup call with his smashing victory over Joe Stevenson and in the post-fight. Florian ran roughshod over the very talented Stevenson and then went off on B.J. Penn saying it's time to take down the master.

Florian told Yahoo! Sports the motivation for his trash-talk in the cage came from Penn's statements after his win at UFC 84 over Sean Sherk when he said that he wasn't too excited to face the winner of Roger Huerta and Kenny Florian:

"I don't think he considered us a threat at all. He didn't consider me threat. He didn't think it was a real challenge. Hopefully I proved to him that I am a threat."

Click below to listen to Florian post-fight interview (ESPNRadio1100 w/Cofield):

The win over Stevenson went exactly as planned according to KenFlo:

"I wanted to stick and move and then make him pay when I got on the inside. Use my range and get on the inside and really beat him up. And then pick him apart from long range with my kicks and my jab. (Then) get on the ground and just destroy him."

Florian mounted Stevenson quickly and finished the fight with a rear-naked choke. During the discussion, he also mentioned that his ESPN television duties actually kept him relaxed during the week. The hard-hitting part of the interview included KenFlo talking about his post-fight dining schedule. He planned on having sushi but joked that none of The Ultimate Fighter 8 cast members would be invited. Florian is referencing a disgusting prank played with sushi two weeks ago on TUF 8.

Couture disagrees with White ... Fedor would crush Lesnar
Brock Lesnar is the champ. He's four fights into his mixed martial arts career and he rules the heavyweight roost. That's amazing. Now the big man can revel in his huge victory, right?

Randy Couture was tracked down by RawVegas.tv and rained on Lesnar's parade saying he's good but not as good as former Pride heavyweight champ Fedor Emelianenko. Meanwhile, UFC president Dana White has said repeatedly that Fedor isn't isn't the best and is overrated.

The Fedor discussion is moot at this point. He's under contract with Affliction. Unless Todd Beard's departure opens the door for some new talks between Affliction and UFC, the fight can't happen anytime soon. Even if Affliction goes under there's been no indication that Fedor or his people really want to sign with the UFC.

Trump sticks with Affliction ... Beard doesn't
Tough talk may work with the average schlub but when you're backed into a corner by billionaires, even the biggest loudmouth will get crushed. Affliction's Todd Beard took on the Fertitta brothers (owners of the UFC and Station Casinos) and embarrassed Donald Trump and Oscar DelaHoya. He's now going bye-bye according to MMAJunkie.com.

Todd Beard, the owner of Affliction, came off as a jackass during his recent appearance on Scott Ferrall's show saying that he was going to get the "wanna be tough guy mobsters" Fertitta brothers. He then followed that up by allegedly making phone threats to the UFC and the Coutures. All of that prompted folks to do a background check on Beard. The convicted felon was told to hit the road today. He resigned and will enter an alcohol rehab program. Beard released this statement:

"I would like to apologize for my comments that may have offended Kim and Randy Couture and (Couture attorney) Mr. (Sam) Spira. "I had a long-standing relationship with the Coutures, and I was deeply and emotionally hurt by some of their recent business decisions. I have only the best of intentions for the success of the Affliction and Xtreme Couture clothing brands and understand that there are personal issues I must address."

Mike Chiapetta of NBC Sports reported earlier on Friday day that Trump was sticking with Affliction regardless of Beard's status. Trump Inc. COO Michael Cohen said media reports of Beard's felonious past putting Trump's gaming license in jeopardy were incorrect:

“Anyway you slice it, it’s wrong and there should be a retraction,” he said. “Beard is not and never has been a shareholder, officer, director or board member of Affliction Entertainment.”

Cohen added that Trump remains committed to the fight company with its next event scheduled for Jan. 24.

The week that was in MMA: poorly planned haircuts

For coverage of Brock Lesnar's historic win and the rest of UFC 91, keep checking in with Yahoo! Sports. The rest of the week's news:

Matt Hughes needs to look at shirts before he signs them.

Tonya Evinger tries to corrupt Gina Carano.

To celebrate the UFC's 15th birthday, Fightlinker takes a look at Andrei Arlovski's hair through the years.

They're not all losers at the Couture household this week. Randy's son Ryan won his UFC debut.

Chuck Liddell might have gotten in a little trouble on the USO tour.

Georges St. Pierre vs. B.J. Penn was officially announced for Super Bowl weekend. If Penn wins, how will that affect the lightweight and welterweight divisions?

And what of Anderson Silva? His list of possible opponents is thin.

The weird saga of Todd Beard ended with him resigning from Affliction

UFC 91: the best of Rogan and Goldberg
That was an entertaining night of fights. I liked that there wasn't a main event that went to the decision, and that every win was by a highlight reel submission or knockout. It will be interesting to see how the pay-per-view numbers shake out, but I did have a bit of anecdotal evidence about the buy rates. When I called my cable company to order the fight, I was on hold for quite a while. The operator said that the phones were ringing off the hook for the fight. Again, it's anecdotal, but I've never had to wait for an operator when trying to order a fight.

As usual, one of the more entertaining, non-fight aspects of the evening was figuring out what statement from our announcers was the most ridiculous. Though they seemed a little toned down -- maybe they don't have to be so outlandish when the fight card is actually good -- but they still had some gems:

"There they are! Those crazy dudes from Tapout!" Crazy, or obnoxious and opportunistic. Whatever.

Is Goldberg pronouncing Rafael Dos Anjos' name correctly? They went back and forth, pronouncing the "J" as in "jar," "J" as in "Jose," and "J" as in they had no idea what they were saying.

"A little north-south here. A little smell my butt." Rogan during the Dos Anjos/Stephens fight

"I'm here with one of the baddest rappers in the world ... buy it! Don't download it, bitches!" Rogan, with Fifty Cent. Just a few minutes after their interview, Joe Stevenson walked in to "Wanksta," by Fifty. Does Fifty sing along to his own songs? Hmmm.

"If you're playing a video game, he's like the last dragon you have to beat, but like a really, really big dragon." Rogan, about Brock Lesnar

"A poke! I don't think it was a poke, I think he got hit in the groin. Here's the replay. Why do I like watching this?" Rogan during the Gurgel fight

The beast has officially arrived: Lesnar smashes Couture

This giant is no fluke. When a 275-pounder hits you with a bomb you go down. Randy Couture took a huge shot, a right elbow early in the second round and was wobbled. But he couldn't deal with the second big shot, a right hand that landed just over his left ear. Couture crumbled to the cage floor and Lesnar pounced on top of him. After 25 hammerfists landed on Couture's noggin, referee Mario Yamasaki had to stop it, making Lesnar the new UFC heavyweight champion.

Couture stayed down on the mat for about 90 seconds trying to collect his wits.

"(Heavyweight champ) sounds really good I cant believe it," said Lesnar. "I want to thank Dana, the UFC and I want to thank this guy. He's got a lot of balls to come back and fight a young buck like me."

Couture was gracious in defeat:

"Those are some bigass hamhocks coming at you. It's hard to get out of the way of them. I felt comfortable with the size difference. That's just a big sombich, that's all there is too it."

KenFlo walks over Stevenson and calls out Penn
What got into Kenny Florian? The mild-mannered Florian smeared Joe Stevenson inside of one round and then got tough with his talk for UFC lightweight champ B.J. Penn.

Florian was overwhelming against one of the best fighters the UFC has to offer in its lightweight division. He was simply too big and yet too elusive for Joe Stevenson. Florian used great footwork to land some solid shots on the feet and then overpowered Stevenson to gain top control. He scored the takedown and then quickly had Stevenson mounted. Florian rained down punches until Stevenson freaked and gave up his back. Florian didn't have to do much before eventually locking in a rear-naked choke. Stevenson tapped seconds later at 4:03 of the first.

Then Florian's words spoke louder than his actions:

"This is exactly what I to do out here now I want B.J.'s belt. B.J. you're one of the best fighters out here. I'm here to test myself. I consider you a master. It's time to kill that master."

Hazelett waits on submission bonus but locks up Beard of the Night

Dustin Hazelett continues find new ways to show off his jiu-jitsu game. Tamdan McCrory is pretty solid on the ground but he was twisted up badly by a Hazelett omoplata. Hazelett worked the hold for over a minute before ripping free McCrory's arm and finishing with a nasty looking armbar at 3:59 of the first.

On style points, Hazelett may have stolen away Submission of the Night from Demian Maia an earlier winner over Nate Quarry. Hazelett definitely gets an award for his facial hair, a Kimbo Slice-like beard. However, he does not get Beard of the Fall, that goes to Seth Petruzelli who went as Kimbo for Halloween.

UPDATE: Hazelett did pick up Submission of the Night and a 60k bonus.

Hendricks no match for Gonzaga

UFC color analyst Joe Rogan once called Gabriel Gonzaga the future of the heavyweight division. That was before the big man suffered devastating losses to Randy Couture and Fabricio Verdum. The skills have always been there but sometimes the fight can be taken out of the Brazilian.

Josh Hendricks was no match. Gonzaga did exactly what you should against lackluster competition destroying Hendricks in one minute on essentially what was a one-punch knockout.

Hendricks, a strong wrestler, tried to clinch and close the distance for the first 50 seconds. He got himself in trouble by dropping his head. That's when Gonzaga locked on a thai clinch. He delivered two knees to soften up Hendricks and then backed up before sending a right hand down the pipe. Hendricks went down in a heap. Gonzaga jumped on top delivering one hammerfist and then looked to ref Steve Mazzagatti to stop the fight. "The Stache" hesitated as Gonzaga threw one more half-hearted punch before the stoppage at 1:00 of the first.

Maia with ease over Quarry
Nate Quarry is a high level striker but you can't punch effectively when you're taken down 14 seconds into the fight. Demian Maia, a ground specialist, shot just seconds into the battle and had Quarry on his back about 13 second later. Maia mounted Quarry 44 seconds into the fight and had his back with a body lock 12 seconds later.

The choke was only a matter of time. "The Rock" survived for another minute before Maia cinched in the rear-naked choke to finish the fight at 2:13 of the first round.

"I never have strategy when I come into a fight. Stand-up, ground it doesn't matter," said Maia. "It's up to Dana White and Joe Silva who I fight next. There are many tough guys I can fight. Maybe Michael Bisping is a good fight for me."

Maia has to be leader right for Submission of the Night.

Riley wins slugfest against Gurgel
Jorge Gurgel may not fight the smartest fights but he consistently puts on great shows. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt too often gets suckered into stand-up wars and he did again facing Aaron Riley. After withstanding the best stand-up round we've seen from Gurgel during his UFC career, Riley consistently beat Gurgel to the punch in the final two rounds. Riley (27-10-1, 1-2 UFC) was the better conditioned fighter as the contest moved along. He gets his first win in the UFC via unanimous decision (29-28 3x).

"It's good to be back," said Riley. "He loves to stand and bang. I've been working on my boxing in Victorville (Ca.), I guess it helped me out in this fight"

Gurgel may get a moral victory out of this one. The fight is the leading candidate as we prep for the main card, for Fight of the Night. Riley and Gurgel could get a bonus in the neighborhood of 50-75k.

Give Stephens his money now, he just got KO of the Night

MMA's four ounce gloves can change any fight in a heartbeat. Jeremy Stephens got sliced and diced on the ground for the opening 10 minutes of the fight. But he threw an uppercut early in the third as if he was tossing a bowling ball at Rafael Dos Anjos. The big right flew right through Dos Anjos' hands and when it landed the Brazilian's eyes immediately rolled back. He dropped and took three more punches against the cage. The lights were out and ref Steve Mazzagatti jumped in to stop it at :39 of the third.

Stephens showed a lot of toughness just to make it to the final round by surviving a series of submission attempts by Dos Anjos. The Brazilian nearly shredded Stephens' shoulder at the end of the first with vicious omoplata.

"It was tight. I thought it was going to pop," said Stephens. "He's an incredible opponent. He had me in some tough stuff. I have heart baby."

The Knockout of the Night is awarded upon completion of the card. Stephens could be due 50-75k if no one else on the card tops his knockout.

Bocek is the better black belt and Brown starts it off with a win

Apparently not all black belts mean the same thing. Mark Bocek gets rave reviews for his jiu-jitsu game. He gave fellow black belt Alvin Robinson a lesson for 13-plus minutes and finally finished the fight with a rear-naked choke at 3:15 of the final round.

Bocek had Robinson on his back and controlled him for 97% of the fight working various chokes from the Robinson's back and the top.

In the first fight of the night, Matt Brown was taken down repeatedly by the strong wrestler but he showed patience and caught Ryan Thomas in two armbars. Thomas was able to work his way out of the first one towards the end of the first round. In round two, his slamming technique of extricating himself from the hold backfired. Thomas had to tap at :57 of the round.

"I'm so ecstatic to win this on two weeks notice," said Brown (8-7, 2-1 UFC). "I had to cut 25 pounds to get here."

Bloated White readies for UFC 91
Most of Dana White's video blogging this week has covered the behind the scenes action from the production and business standpoint. Here is the Thursday account of White's day.

The highlights include ripping Jack Link's beef jerky, a Brock Lesnar sponsor at UFC 87. Kenny Florian trainer Mark Della Grotte actually outcurses White during a 15 second clip. Marty Cordova fills the daily old baseball player quota. A woman from DirectTV looks like she's ready to slap someone in the face for comment that she misunderstood. Something called "Saucy" abuses the camera. The biggest name in the MMA media, Jon Anik from ESPN, also makes an appearance.

Brown is a big fan of TUF troublemakers
Each season of The Ultimate Fighter seems to top itself with the level of debauchery and immaturity. Matt Brown, a cast member last season, was interested in one thing, fighting. He was all business. Jeremy May found out quickly that there are certain guys you don't mess with when he spike Brown's chew with lemon juice. May got a beating in the cage as a reward. This season has been out of the control with body fluids entering the mix and Junie Browning on the edge of mental breakdown at any moment.

You may be surprised to learn that the stoic Brown actually watches the show and really enjoys the troublemakers. He told Yahoo! Sports and MMARated that he also an active participant on the MMA blogosphere.

Brown faces Ryan Thomas tonight at UFC 91 in a welterweight bout on the undercard.

Vegas bettors are all over Lesnar

Gamblers are the same no matter what sport they're wagering on. People love the dominating favorites and go nuts over the trendy pick. That said, there's a reason Las Vegas continues to build billion dollar casinos each year. The sportsbooks don't lose. They may lose a single event or a day or even a month. But when the money is counted at the end of each year, the sportsbooks beat the players. The NFL has had one year in the last 20 where the favorites actually outpaced the underdogs. That's a long set-up to tell you that the heavy betting has been on Brock Lesnar for his fight against Randy Couture at UFC 91. The Vegas books set the line at -125, making Couture a small favorite. Bettors have pounded the books with Lesnar money and he is now a -130 favorite at the MGM. That's a huge swing for a fight of this magnitude. Is the public right on this one? Make sure you check out all of the Yahoo! MMA Experts Blog picks.

Below are the updated odds for the entire card (Venetian Resort Hotel - Las Vegas). Notice there are varying lines on the main event. If you're in Vegas or playing the fight in far away places make sure that you find the best number for your side.

Brock Lesnar (-125) v. Randy Couture (+105)

Lesnar win in the first round (+180)

Couture by decision (+300)

Kenny Florian (-190) v. Joe Stevenson (+160)

Demian Maia (-190) v. Nate Quarry (+160)

Dustin Hazelett (-185) v. Tamdan McCrory (+155)

Gabriel Gonzaga (-360) v. Josh Hendricks (+280)

Jorge Gurgel (-150) v. Aaron Riley (+120)

Jeremy Stephens (-155) v. Rafael Dos Anjos (+125)

Alvin Robinson (-130) v. Mark Bocek (EVEN)

Matt Brown (-180) v. Ryan Thomas (+150)

Sports betting on MMA is simple to understand. When you see a minus number that is the amount you need to bet to win $100. The favorite is always a minus number. So the bigger the minus number, the bigger favorite that fighter is. Anything over -300 is a huge favorite. Anderson Silva was a huge favorite at -800 for his UFC 90 fight. The plus number is what you get if you a bet a dog for $100.

Lesnar is tired of being persecuted over his skin color

Brock Lesnar is an intriguing character. He's a perfect match for the mixed martial arts world where so few fighters have a filter. Lesnar's got a fair amount of attention for his behavior on ESPN's investigative show E60. 'The Next Big Thing' stormed off the set when interviewer Tom Farrey asked a question about steroids.

Lesnar was asked about the explosion by Larry Pepe of ProMMARadio during a recent conversation and thought he was being targeted because of his skin color:

"I've been accused of using steroids my entire life probably since the 10th grade. I've never failed a drug test. Now if was a black guy and looked the way I do would I get asked this question a 100 times?"

Lesnar said it's more commonplace for African-Americans to have the ripped look:

"I'm a white dude who is shredded and you just don't see a whole lot of it. It's funny how you get singled out."

Good thing Lesnar reserved his racial theories for the internet rather than the E60 piece. One can only imagine the attention that comments like these would've gotten uf they were uttered in the mainstream.

Some mainstream media members are catching on
Jim Rome did a very good interview with UFC president Dana White on Thursday to preview the Randy Couture-Brock Lesnar fight. Rome is about as big as it gets in sports radio yet he hasn't gotten lazy like so many of his contemporaries. He's in touch with his younger listeners/viewers. There's nothing earth-shattering in this quickie piece on Rome is Burning, but it's clear he did his homework. Tony Kornheiser's 'I'm old and know nothing about sports' act is getting old. Plus it really loses it's comedic value when you realize that it's not an act.

Rome and White covered all angles to the fight saying it could come down to Brock Lesnar's versatility and ability to adjust his gameplan:

"I was Brock Lesnar six or seven years ago," said White quoting Couture. "I know what he doesn't know. I know what holes are in his game. I'm gonna expose them. I'm gonna beat him."

White does mention that it'll be a challenge for Couture to overcome a previous weakness and that is taking on big guys. We keep hearing Couture had trouble against bigger fighters in the past. Before his layoff he beat 252 lb. Gabe Gonzaga and 264 lb. Tim Sylvia. It's kind of insulting to compare Lesnar with the big guys who did beat Couture in the past. An in-shape Ricco Rodriguez (240 lb.) and Josh Barnett (255 lb.) are very well-rounded guys.

Old man in the cage on Saturday may be Lesnar
Randy Couture may not speak in brash tones but the people around him certainly are as he readies to defend his heavyweight title at UFC 91. His wife Kim and coach Shawn Tompkins have had plenty to say about Brock Lesnar's trash talk.

"He can say whatever he wants," Kim told Yahoo! Sports on Thursday morning after her own boxing workout. "But when that cage door locks he's going to have to convince himself of all of the crap he talks. That's not really going to save him."

She says Lesnar's disrespectful demeanor is to be expected from a guy who made his name in pro wrestling:

"He's just wants the attention. He's kind of glory hungry. Randy will never stoop to that level. Randy's actions will speak louder than words. I think in this fight we're going to see Randy make him feel old."

Tompkins told Adam Hill of the Las Vegas Review-Journal that Lesnar has potential but Couture is on another level:

"He's big. He's athletic. He's young. He's powerful," Tompkins said of Lesnar. "But he's not Randy Couture, and he never will be."

Kim Couture thinks it's business as usual in spite of the fact that her husband returns from a 15 month layoff and the opponent will have a 50 lb. weight advantage.

"He's not worried about anything. The last two guys (Tim Sylvia and Gabriel Gonzaga) were big and experienced. Sylvia has much more experience and is very technical. That was probably the worst out of the three. So I don't think he's worried at all."

Couture declined to speak about her legal fight against Affliction's Todd Beard. On Thursday, she won a restraining order against the apparel company's owner. She alleged that Beard has made several threatening phone calls. It's also come to light that Beard has several felony convictions for fraud for which he served 30 months in prison, has dealt with previous allegations of violence against women and plead no contest recently in California to threatening Karlos Shaverdian's life. Couture did clarify that neither she or Randy were actually in court for the restraining order proceedings on Wednesday morning in Las Vegas.

White and Couture in awe as they ready for UFC 91

There was a festive mood around the UFC 91 press conference. President Dana White has been there since the beginning of the UFC rebirth in 2001 as has returning heavyweight champ Randy Couture. Both spoke at length about how far the company has come mentioning that the public press conference in the MGM Grand lobby in front of close to 1000 fans was a gigantic deal.

The UFC did its first public press conference in August at the Mall of America before UFC 87 in front of roughly 2,000 fans. Events on this grand scale were the last thing White could imagine as he and the Fertitta brothers were building the company. White said he thought they could close the doors at any moment between 2001-2005 before The Ultimate Fighter reality show helped move the sport towards the mainstream:

"We were just having trouble getting the mainstream exposure and people to know the fights were on. I didn't know until it started to hit and started to tip over. That's how I lost my hair. I had a pretty good head of hair when we started this thing. I thought we were going out of business every weekend."

Couture was thrilled to see the big turnout in Las Vegas:

"I don't think we have to wait until Saturday night to see how far the sport has come. This is an amazing press conference. My first UFC we did the weigh-ins at the Holiday Inn in Augusta, Georgia. They had the scale in a little broom closet over on the side. It's a remarkable transition."

Part I:

Part II:

You can watch the opening statements of the presser at MMARated. The highlights included White dropping an s-bomb in a public forum. Couture talked about never really being inactive during his time without a fight. Preparing all of Xtreme Couture's big name fighters for their matchesover the last 15 months, kept Couture in the zone. But he did say to himself, "What the hell am I doing here" a few times while prepping for Brock Lesnar against a bevy of 275 lb. training parters.

Lesnar dropped a funny line about being in kindergarten the first time he saw a Couture fight in UFC. B.J. Penn and Anderson Silva were also on hand to ask questions. Penn mocked on Kenny Florian by asking if it was true that he was slated to play Couture's son in the next installment of the Scorpion King.

One interesting twist to the press conference was the addition of fan questions. Several attendees in the MGM lobby were allowed to throw some querys at the fighters and White. Somehow I don't see the NFL allowing that anytime soon. Maybe it's another example of how MMA has developed a close bond with its fans while the traditional power sports seem to have a chasm growing between their athletes and fans.

Tables turn in Hawaii, Starnes is now doing the chasing

Kalib Starnes has been a human punching bag since a lackluster debacle against Nate Quarry at UFC 83. Starnes, who suffered a broken foot in the second round, was mocked in the cage by Quarry, booed by 21,000 fans at the Bell Centre, dumped by UFC and then ripped on the internet for months. This weekend Starnes' was ready to turn the page against Hawaii's top middleweight Kala Kolohe Hose fighting for Destiny in Honolulu on Saturday night. One problem, Hose is now doing the running.

Starnes (8-3-1, 2-3 UFC) was shocked at today's press conference when Hose no-showed. His representative Patrick Freitas gave several excuses for his fighter and explained that he would not be fighting Starnes on Saturday night. Hose released a statement on MMAHawaii just minutes ago:

On October 14, 2009 I signed a contract with Destiny that clearly stated the contest would be three three-minute rounds of mixed martial arts (MMA). Most professional MMA bouts are three five-minute rounds, so I immediately questioned Destiny’s promoter about the shortened rounds. At that time he assured me that the three-minute round scheduling was correct. I accepted the terms of the shorter rounds, as shorter rounds favored my _style_ and because my training was limited by a recent leg injury. My coaches and team set forth on a game plan and an intense training program specifically designed for the three-minute round format.

Hose claims that the contract was altered by the promoters of Destiny to read three five-minute rounds. He tried to renegotiate but to no avail so he's pulling out of the fight. Starnes' rep Joyce Valdes says Starnes did offer to fight Hose with the shorter rounds.

"He said that Kala Hose was having a contract dispute," Starnes commented on Freitas' statement at the press conference. "Then he said in the same statement that he had stopped training a few weeks ago. Then he said that he had hurt his leg."

The drama has been unfolding all evening with some back and forth talk on MMAHawaii's forum.

It appears that unbeaten Dylan Clay may step in on short notice to face Starnes on Saturday. Starnes wants to fight and begin to put the disasterous performance at UFC 83 behind him but he still stings from the treatment he received that night and the months following:

"I won fights and had my opponents back off a bit. I never took it upon myself to mock them. I think he really enjoyed the attention he got from that. He was really playing it up. If you talk down and degrade your opponent what does that make you? I don't know what he gets out of it."

He also mentions that Quarry's corner stormed into the ring to harass him right after the fight. That was nothing compare to the explosion of anger pointed in his direction by the fans and media. Starnes told Neil Davidson of the Canadian Press that he was more shocked:

"They're sitting in the stands, they're sitting in front of their television sets and somehow they feel like they identify with these athletes and these people, that they're personally affected by the outcome of a match. It's something that I really don't understand. I think it's tied into some kind of nationalism and irrational kind of jingoism, it's almost like they're cheering for their nation's army. They're just waving a flag, we're the best. .. it's always been to me kind of a frightening behaviour. I've always been put off by that side of an attitude, I've never understood it."

Starnes said after 3 1/2 months in a cast for his foot, he re-dedicated himself to strengthening his body in preparation for this weekend's fight. He had worked mostly on his boxing before the Quarry fight and lost some of his strength.

Tap or Gonzaga will break your arm
Gabriel Gonzaga is back in the cage this Saturday against a lesser known fighter in Josh Hendricks. The UFC is clearly trying to rebuild Gonzaga's name and confidence after back-to-back losses against Randy Couture and Fabricio Werdum. Last time out, he did get back on the winning track beating Justin McCully by submissionat UFC 86.

Gonzaga is a scary man. The kimura he finished that fight with was one of the most vicious finishes in recent UFC memory. With the help of MMARated, Yahoo! Sports spoke with Gonzaga about showing no mercy in finishing positions, his future and the fight against Hendricks.
